Action Genre

The action genre is commonly described as "a film genre in which the protagonist or protagonists are thrust into a series of events that typically include violence, extended fighting, physical feats, and frantic chases.”

For many action films, the target audience is often 16 to 25-year-old males, although there are many exceptions.

Action films tend to feature a resourceful hero struggling against great enemies and obstacles, which include life-threatening situations, a dangerous villain, or a pursuit which usually concludes in victory for the hero.

Action films are more often than not marketed with trailers filled with many fight sequences, lots of CGI, and special effects; Action films spend large amounts of money on large marketing campaigns that include promotions, collaborations, and trailers played at large events such as The Super Bowl.

Action films often contain elements of adventure, thriller, drama, and spy fiction genres.

Here are some examples:

In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Steve Rogers, aka Captain America (Chris Evans), is adjusting to modern times. An attack on a S.H.I.E.L.D. by a mysterious new enemy throws Rogers into a battle that puts the whole world at risk. Teaming up with the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and a new ally, the Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Rogers struggles to expose an ever-expanding conspiracy that goes all the way to the top.

This movie deals with themes of government conspiracies, global surveillance, and how far should a person trust their country. The movie features many action sequences filled with explosions, quick cuts, epic music, and ends with a large-scale aerial battle. Although the film features many practical effects and stuntwork, lots of the supeheriocs are enhanced or created with CGI and other digital effects.

After becoming a "00" operative, British Secret Service agent James Bond (Daniel Craig) travels the world searching for connections to Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), a man who finances global terrorist organizations. M16 sends in to Bond to play in a high-stakes poker game that Le Chiffre is using to raise money for his clients. M16 hopes that their newest agent will go all in and topple the man's organization.

Casino Royale deals with themes of global control, terrorist organizations, and fits into the spy genre as well. As Casino Royale was released in 2006, its CGI and digital effects are not nearly as prevalent as they are in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, released in 2014. Casino Royale features a nearly 7-minute long chase sequence through Madagascar, which includes one of the most famous uses of parkour in a film, and helped popularize the sport. This sequence is almost entirely practical, with only some wires and safety precautions being removed digitally. Many motifs and audio cues which are iconic to the Bond franchise are used to signal intense or action-packed moments and are of course accompanied by a theme song and epic score throughout.

A few more quick examples:

Hopefully, this post shows some similarities that can be found in most action movies!
